Re: Christ Preached to the spirits in hades-

I think there is an easy natural reading of 1 Peter 4:6 that makes a lot more sense. It says the gospel was preached to those who are dead. If I tell you that Menno Simons preached the gospel to those who are dead, are you going to think that means Menno Simons went to Hades and preached to dead pe...

Re: Christ Preached to the spirits in hades-

Paul, I agree after this life we don't get second chances-BUT what is meant then by "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in...

Re: Christ Preached to the spirits in hades-

Have you ever heard a sermon that explained these passages? Apostle Peter knew 'more' about this then what he says here, obviously Jesus would have explained all this to His disciples when He rose from the dead- spending 40 days with them they probably had a LOT of conversations- I heard a message ...

Re: Did Jesus teach salvation by works?

I agree Jesus did not preach on grace. I consider the parable of the prodigal son to be one big sermon on the grace of God to be honest. Even though the word "grace" might not have been mentioned like in the ministry of Paul, Gods grace was definitely present in the ministry of Christ. An...

Re: Satan - Any real good deeds?

I am a little bit puzzled aswell by this question, how could pure evil have any genuine good deed? In the OT (1 Samuel 28) the witch of endor helped Saul to conjure up the spirit of Samuel, which I assume must've been through demonic force, though one can wonder whether that was really Samuel or a d...

Re: Doctrine, Theology, Stories

As I see it, doctrine can encompass teaching on any subject, and Bible doctrine any teaching on subjects related to the Bible, but theology is specifically related to doctrine about God. So the subject of modesty, for example, would involve doctrine but not theology; atonement would involve both do...

Re: Doctrine, Theology, Stories

Haha that's from lester's website Valerie, I think both doctrine and theology (don't really know the difference to be honest) teach us the Biblical truth of who God is, who we are and how we can serve Him Biblically. And stories show us how theology or doctrine is lived out (or not) in everyday life.

Re: Salvation by faith and works..?

So do we believe choosing to sin sends you to hell or not? Yes, but when we are born again we will not choose to sin habitually because we received a new heart with new desires. As 1 John 3 says, those that are born again cannot sin: 1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinnet...

Re: Salvation by faith and works..?

Do you think it's appropriate to wait all year for Mennonites to show up to sing on the street and pass out tracts, and then yell at any passersby who take a tract "You can't be good!" "Your works can't save you, stop trying to be good!" "You're sinning, there's nobody good...

Re: Salvation by faith and works..?

Perhaps you misunderstood Burkholder's meaning, because he sees salvation not so much as an event, but as a process (see the bolded sections above). "Yet as already said, true faith is much more precious than these. For according to the testimony of Jesus Christ, not a soul will be lost that h...
