Re: Literacy Rates of High School Graduates
Public vouchers should come with zero strings attached. They should be a check written to the parents, given them just like a child tax refund. So if I have 3 kids and the voucher is $15,000 per kid, can I use my voucher on hookers and blow? Can I use it to buy a case of AR-15s and ammo because I'm...

Re: CPR with sacrificial love.
You might wonder how this relates to Anabaptism... its very simple. Respond to the scenario below. You are out on a hike by yourself and you see a fellow hiker a little distance ahead. They fall down and are not moving. You being the great person you are run over and determine they have no pulse an...

Re: Literacy Rates of High School Graduates
Sure, but this is all kind of a side-argument from my main point that for the bulk of public school students in the US (which are majority poor and majority non-white) a voucher is not simply the return of their own taxes that they paid to the government. Most families pay nothing close in taxes to...

Rents are determined by the housing market in your area. Not by itemizing your own individual costs and then adding a profit margin on top. You might be able to completely recoup your property taxes through your rents and pocket an additional 50% profit. Or you might lose money every month. The mar...

Re: Literacy Rates of High School Graduates
Where I am with Josh - a big step the right direction is a pure voucher system. Belgium for instance has a such a system since 1958. End the monopoly. In Belgium, private schools and even home schooling is highly regulated and education is compulsory through HS. I doubt many Menno schools would wel...

Re: God's Missionary Church? Anabaptist?
There are several God's Missionary Church congregations in my area, and I'm acquainted with a few of their people. It is indeed a conservative Wesleyan Holiness church, definitely not Anabaptist, although there are areas of overlapping concern and similar practice, such as modest dress.

Re: Literacy Rates of High School Graduates
Standardized testing would actually be useful in that context. As a diagnostic tool to determine where students are weak and where to target your instruction. But in the public schools they are never used that way. Well, to be perfectly correct we do actually use various standardized tests all the ...

Re: Literacy Rates of High School Graduates
I will say that our lessons, testing and grading in our schools, is not being manipulated and adjusted in order to "show" certain achievements. Our lessons, testing and grading has remained pretty much the same for many years. I'm not saying that any of these things happen at your communi...

Re: Literacy Rates of High School Graduates
You DON'T follow the same Common Core curriculum standards and standardized testing requirements that RZehr is criticizing the public schools for temporarily suspending? Generally speaking, that is correct. State standards, and their applicability to private schools, vary by state, but from what I ...
