Re: A Mennonite view of divorce and remarriage

Wade, what are you saying? Are you saying that since all men are sinners, they deserve it and are guilty if their wives cheat on them, divorce them, and abandon them? I don't think Jesus said anywhere that everyone is automatically guilty (in marriage); indeed, he gave an exception to someone who di...

Re: Separation from unbelieving family members

When one continuously has conflicts with everyone else around you, it's often wise to ask if the problem is with everyone else or if it's with you. I think we should do our best to be a strong witness of reconciliation, peacemaking, and love to our families. Unfortunately, as a new believer, I didn'...

Re: A Mennonite view of divorce and remarriage

Where does the Bible ever refer to marriages as invalid? It's a concept I can't really find in the New Testament. Luke 16:18 “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. It seems to me Jesus is implying ...

Re: A Mennonite view of divorce and remarriage

I wish we could talk about the elephant in the room of how tolerating divorce and remarriage would ruin our Plain communities, but without having to twist and stretch scripture to do so.

Re: A Mennonite view of divorce and remarriage

So, should I reconcile with my ex wife or not? According to the Followers of the Way, doing so will consign both of us to hell. According to Beachy or Midwest, we should reconcile. Maybe half the Beachy's. The other half take a similar position as Eastern or Pilgrim. In actuality, I don't know of a...

So, should I reconcile with my ex wife or not? According to the Followers of the Way, doing so will consign both of us to hell. According to Beachy or Midwest, we should reconcile. There isn't really a "play it safe" option here. And I think God does determine what adultery is - but that d...

Re: A Mennonite view of divorce and remarriage

Which standard of adultery determines admission to heaven or hell?

Do we go with the more moderate Beachy, Midwest, etc. standard or the more strict standard of Eastern, Followers of the Way in Boston, etc.?

Re: A Mennonite view of divorce and remarriage

Would anyone like a thread to explore what redemptive and reconciliatory ways are to deal with either divorced people or divorced and remarried people?
