I agree. I have a lot of respect for the wisdom and deep thinking she shares.

She goes back to the early days of MD and I have learned a lot from her.
Oh brother. That's scary! :o

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

Steve, I feel like this the same “mismatch” that happens when I try to communicate with folks like Hats Off, ernie, mike, and so forth. For some reason, our different cultural backgrounds make us rub each other the wrong way and make us feel like the other person is blowing us off. Can we communica...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

Things that are happening today can be addressed without knowing what Anabaptists thought 75-150 years ago. I disagree. The right experts to consult are sociologists and historians who can help us understand how things were dealt with in the past, and what the long term consequences were. Most soli...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

What do you mean that "some of you are contributing opinions without any cultural history"? Do you understand what sexual issues were a concern for Conservative Anabaptist culture seventy-five or a hundred, or even a hundred and fifty years ago? Do you know how it was dealt with? Can you ...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

Ken asks some salient questions here. This thread is for constructively discussing how we reform our culture to address the scourge of sexual abuse (and cover-up). Good morning, It has been quite a while since I've been on or commented on this forum. I was reminded again of its existence when I was...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

So here is my thought...I think its true in people, in organizations, and in cultures that their greatest strengths can also be their greatest weaknesses. So, lets say I love someone. I love how they stimulate my thinking, I love having long discussions with them, they see things that are funny that...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

Steve, what you talk about may have an impact in maintaining the status quo, but has not been the main reason. That may prevent current leadership from dealing with the issues but Catholics have shown us that the impetus for change has to come from the laity. So aside from sweeping aside all leader...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

You might have some good points here, Steve, but these are just your opinions. It is not particularly helpful in understanding Anabaptist culture at all. But that is the culture!! Money/status/pride is why this is swept under the rug.... we risk loosing that money/status in doing so. Again, you are...

Re: What has to happen? Reforming our culture

So what is the first thing we need to understand about Anabaptist culture to begin a discussion about it? I made the conversion to a conservative church when I was 17. Its was a culture shock to say the least. I would say what hinders these groups from dealing properly with the issue at hand is the...

Re: Capitalism vs Socialism vs Christianity

Here is an article that I thought was particularly helpful in understanding the philosophical nature underpinning Western economic and political policy. You might think about reading it in light of you and your daughter's discussion. Invite her to read it as well. 8-) https://americanmind.org/essays...
