Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

I would say the brotherhood should support anyone who labours in the gospel ministry. So I have duties to arrange distribution in tracts, and the brotherhood pays for the tracts. If I needed help to pay for expenses in driving them around, I could ask for that. (Recently a family that is on the les...

Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

I have a hard time that a paid pastor is easier to socialise with. If anything, it makes relating to them a lot harder. When coupled with a desire for “qualifications” and higher education, this also means people seeking to be ministers will start going to seminaries or similar colleges. The histor...

Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

An even better question is why ordained men should be paid but the common member is expected to work and live independently. I think Paul answers that question for you. 1 Timothy 5:17-18 NKJV 17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word a...

Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

Are you saying brotherhood support of church leaders or brotherhood support of anyone in need? If you are saying brotherhood support of church leaders, that's what I'm suggesting as well. If you are saying brotherhood support of anyone in need, that seems to miss the context of these passages. I wo...

Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

How do we change to this way of thinking as conservative Anabaptists? Do some interviews with churches who hire pastors one day per week or support them otherwise so that they don't have to work a job 40 hours per week. Then write a book about it or do a series of interviews on Anabaptist Perspecti...

Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

I think first you’ll have to find and showing CA’s Scripture that supports the idea of paid pastors. I’ve only seen the opposite emphasis against such. So yeah let’s follow the biblical model but it seems we may be miles apart? I can think of a few scriptures that suggest supporting those who labor...

Re: Cons. Anabaptist ordination practices

If you change the thinking of conservative Anabaptists, they won’t be conservative anymore. For an obvious example of this, in the CMC/RNoC, congregations have transitioned to paying their pastors. It is a useful case study to learn the changes this brings about. The term “hireling” comes from scri...

Re: Cons. Anabaptist ordination practices

I'm not aware that this has ever been tried but I'm curious why it hasn't, given all the NT teachings on this matter. Christians throughout the millennia have had a habit of emphasizing one teaching, and trying to force all other teachings to be interpreted through the lens of the teaching they emp...

Re: Cons. Anabaptist ordination practices

Did it occur to any of you that in many countries foreigners cannot work in the local economy? Therefor if they are to eat, they must be paid from home. Similar, if they have to make a living trading in the local economy, it opens them to charges of exploitation. That is largely the reason why miss...
