Re: Basic Christian Beliefs

I just try to keep it simple and say that a Christian (ie, a person who shares the faith of the Apostles) is someone who can say the Apostle's Creed without crossing their fingers.

Re: Islamic arguments about God

Franklin, I think that Christianity is more robust than you give it credit for. It has always been under one threat or another, either external or internal, and yet 2000 years later here we are. Inductive reasoning comes naturally to people, more so than deductive reasoning. And deductive reasoning ...

Re: Basic Christian Beliefs

I would hesitate to call Oneness Pentecostals "not Christians". I think this shows the trap of fundamentalism. I think the basics of being a Christian are following what Jesus said, not some list of abstract beliefs. My concern is that there are basic beliefs that are part of being a Chri...

Re: Ecclesiastes

In terms of the Parable of the Talents, Solomon is the man who buried his talent and at the end hastily dug it up and put it in the bank - just in time! While Job is the man who invested his talent and earned ten-fold - certainly materially as the epilogue makes clear but more importantly his gain ...

Re: Islamic arguments about God

I'm late to the party, but I will throw my 2 bits in. Christianity is at the deepest level a revealed faith. No philosopher would dream up a Trinity but we believe it, (not because it is referred to explicitly in the Bible but) because the authorities of the (then) unified church agreed fairly early...

Re: Ecclesiastes

About Ecclesiastes and Job, there are some parallels, but there are also some definite contrasts. Job lost everything <> Solomon never lost a thing Job was carefully righteousness <> Solomon fell away and by his own account lived for himself through much of his life. Job complained to God about life...

Re: What the Mennonites got wrong

1) There is a tendency to Christian elitism. Mennonites often seem to want to distinguish themselves from the rest of the Church and disparage other Christian groups which I do not believe is healthful. Not just among conservative Mennonites, but many progressive Mennos do it too. At the extreme you...

Re: Credible News Sources

You pretty much have to do your own fact checking by comparing different sources. A "fact check" site is one of those sources and they are not infallible. For example, one site I saw debunked the idea that there was anything sketchy about the Clinton Foundation, but my personal review of t...

Re: Presidential elections, for whom are you?

Not voting of course since I am not American, but leaning Trump in my sympathies (or more anti-Clinton to be accurate). Apparent the Amish are not so reserved as some on this board: https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2016/11/03/action-alert-pennsylvania-drivers-needed-to-assist-amish-voters/ and, ...
