Re: Socialism Vs. Capitalism

But in some parts of economy, government and private enterprises competed and the government lost. The most debated case was, of course, prices - and the market was a lot better in determining prices than the government. Then, were the governments really so much more successful in infrastructure? Af...

Re: Poll: Is it religious persecution... ???

Ernie, my principal objection is that we as Christians are citizens in heaven and have no claim on the earth (even if we can appeal to a contract or a promise when and insofar as it is given). That means that Christians have no reason to claim other Christians to recognize them or appreciate them or...

Re: Love & hate?

As for "love" I define it as an interest in the wholeness or perfection of things, including the happiness w.r.t. persons. ("I'm happy if you are happy.") I start with things, because Augustine seems to have recommended that we can start with loving anything at all, even being a ...

Re: Love & hate?

My system for explaining damaging behaviour is: a) out of ruthlessness (I can't be bothered to reflect if the other one is damaged) b) out of weakness (I understand that the other one is damaged, but am not able to stop it) c) out of hostility (I want the other one to be damaged) which in itself ste...

Re: The new fight against "Christian nationalism"

I'm fine with Anabaptists being truly disinterested in power or sovereignty. Only: When some Anabaptists feel a resentment against other people's lust for power or sovereignty - or if they feel that they are chosen to fight against other people's power and sovereignty - isn't this an indicator that ...

Re: Russia Laundering Propoganda

The continuous American horror to be "influenced" by foreign propaganda is completely ridiculous, because the Americans have not the least scruples to "influence" those other countries. Some people don't understand the Golden Rule: If you don't want it done to you, don't do it to ...

Re: The Right-Winger Calling for Social Democracy

As a German I'd say that we have "been there, done that". The Social Democracy promoted measures against economical liberalism before 1933 and the National Socialists adopted the economical program of the moderate (non-Marxist) Social Democrats. Some of those measures were really useful, l...

Re: Is Trump legally qualified to be a presidential candidate?

An interesting aside: Ron Unz reminded us that there has already been a candidate who promoted his candidacy from prison: the Socialist Eugene Debs after WWI. Debs was at that time condemned because of "sedition" which is afaik one of the legal challenges for Trump. As far as I know the le...

The new fight against "Christian nationalism"

I have treated Christian nationalism as an interesting intellectual challenge. (My solution is "federalism" - the Catholic concept of a society which on the one hand allows all kinds of people, Christians included, to separate into different associations who more or less rule themselves - ...

Re: High Energy Populist Personalities

If Huey Long was a populist, why not F.D.Roosevelt? Long was the most important competitor to Roosevelt (until they killed him). So the two may share personal character treats.
But of course "populist" was invented as an invectice against the political losers.
