Re: Ecclesiastes
I have a real problem with Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived. I cannot begin to comprehend the wisdom - it seems to me at the beginning he understood, but then he went on to use (abuse?) the resources his father had left him. I can't wrap my head around the wisdom of 700 wives plus 300 concubi...

Re: Ecclesiastes
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. (Ecc 1:9-10 KJV) How do you view a st...

Re: POLL: Relating to Power: The Christian and Politics
I believe it is appropriate for Christians today to follow the example of Christ and the Apostles in preaching about relevant issues, but I really don't see any NT precedent for telling secular authorities how they ought to govern. I agree, but how about their moral conduct? "For Herod had lai...

Re: St. Valentine's Day
We have to decide how much to engage the culture in ways that aren't harmful. Every day of the year has an expectation to be driven by retail, so holidays are no different. At the risk of rabbit trailing far away from Anabaptist theology and practice, I think the retail world uses a fear campaign t...

Re: St. Valentine's Day
In that case you might consider correcting the Wikipedia entry on Saint Valentine. In addition, he should consider correcting Catholic Online. http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=159 "Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman sa...

Re: St. Valentine's Day
I am not here to judge. I am just projecting my curiosity. In my eyes, Valentine's Day has become an expectation driven by retail. Everyone has to run out and spend money. In addition, it takes something good and puts the focus on only one day. Do we let the standards of the world dictate us in othe...

Re: St. Valentine's Day
I realize there is likely to be some variation among various groups. As noted, Valentine's Day is a secular holiday (a Catholic might disagree). Therefore, the degree in which Mennonites are willing to participate in the world's holidays is how this subject relates to Anabaptist practice.

St. Valentine's Day
What would be the Anabaptist/Mennonite approach to Valentine's Day?
