Re: The first Christian Church was Jewish

The interesting thing is in my eyes the upcoming of Phariseeism (the church as a community of the just or saint people) and, as its counterpart, the Jesus movement (the church as a community of sinners). That is a division which needs to be kept up, even if it is uncomfortable for Anabaptists.

Re: The first Christian Church was Jewish

I don't think that the bible, as a whole, CAN be the foundation of any religion. You cannot copy all role models at the same time. The book developed over nearly thousand years.

AW comment

I have decided to pack my sporadic comments of AW ("Anabaptist World") articles into one regular topic, commenting articles I find particularly obnoxious, disturbing and absurd. (In former times I have written letters-to-the-editors, but in the meantime the editors have decided that they d...

Re: Black and White Christianity

Some random thoughts: 1. Quakers preferred grey clothing (which became a distinctive marker), but if we look into the beginnings, the idea was to have clothing in the natural colour of the threads, without any kind of "colouring". I have not found if this was equally handled for wool and f...

Prison conditions: CMU and SAM

"Justice" is an interesting field for critique, but that cannot work without a regular observation and commentation. Which afaik doesn't exist in Anabaptist circles. One of my particular concerns is the Plea Deal - in my eyes a way to extort confessions by "showing the instruments&quo...

Precautions for the next election?

As for the "insurrection", I have argued that Democrats never believed in a real danger of insurrection, because they have not discussed nor taken any precautionary measures against future insurrections. (For example, when the Germans truly feared an "insurrection" in 1918 Berlin...

Re: Why did you come?

If you are from non-anabaptist background, what is it that drew you to the anabaptist? Basically I wanted to escape the Barthian prison in which I was educated. And John Yoder was the one and only man who argued against Barth on his own level (having studied under Barth for a while) and I found just...

Why should one not support the judicial system?

I am happy that Anabaptists still shy away from becoming judges etc. But i miss a clear and reasonable theological standpoint - the religious "leaders" don't want to speak about that. Myself, I remember that I wrote about this some years ago, and I mentioned as one of the central problems ...

Re: The bloodthirsty nature of the evangelical political right wing

We may call it a certain success for pacifists that wars have to be framed as "a means to promote permanent peace" nowadays. That started with WW1 ("the war to end all wars"), was revived in WW2 and lures behind the momentaneous wars which are generally justified by references to...
