Re: Doing Penance

In our church, Lent is a time for examining our consciences, self reflection and penance. Is there a practice of penance in Anabaptist fellowships or is there another view that's held? Liberal Mennonites started practicing Lent a few decades ago. Plain Anabaptists refrain from such practices, belie...

Re: Standards vs Reality

Please don't keep quiet. If it's burning in you badly enough that you need to bite your tongue to keep it in, we want to hear it! I'm from MB, my wife is not. And this is a valuable discussion to have here, I think. I can say for a fact that talking about issues you have faced in church on MennoNet...

Re: Standards vs Reality

There's a lot of good insight and discussion in this topic, thank you for starting it. Unfortunately as a NMB I can't help but feel I should bite my tongue and not say anything. Please don't keep quiet. If it's burning in you badly enough that you need to bite your tongue to keep it in, we want to ...

Re: Non-Anabaptist Kingdom Christians

PBs were never nonresistant, nor would they meet Ernie's definition of "kingdom Christian" if he requires either an Amish-Deuteronomy 24 or Webb view of marriage. You may want to take a look at this article: Peter Brock, "The Peace Testimony of the Early Plymouth Brethren," Chur...

Re: Non-Anabaptist Kingdom Christians

This is a thread to list fellowships (including home fellowships) who generally fit David Bercot's definition of "Kingdom Christian" . These would be folks who practice head-covering, non-resistance, modest dress, non-involvement in professional sports, do not allow divorce and remarriage...

Re: Conformity or Persecution in the church

I think Franklin is making the point that our choices, actions, etc., have an effect on others in our church. And I agree that modern Christianity has imbibed too much from of American society. Modern Christianity seems to believe and promote the idea that all that matters is myself, and I shouldn'...

Re: Joy

We have 7 converts telling their testimonies including 4 of non Mennonite background and they will be baptised if the congregation accepts them in a few weeks. Wow! Great to hear this. What are you-all doing right? Really, wow, I join you in rejoicing in this move of God. J.M. According to a lot of...

Re: Standards vs Reality

I know two brothers here in Holmes County who grew up Beachy AM, and joined the Old Order Amish. I hope I do not sound exceedingly cynical, but did they marry into the church? One of them married one of my wife's relatives, & I don't know his story. The other one I worked with for about 3 years...

Re: Standards vs Reality

Their move toward plainness is front and center in their lives, and each life choice is significant because it represents a major change for them. Exactly, it is was a major change and adjustment. We were raised in the church, and were not used to another set of standards outside of the Bible. We c...
