Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

Overall, institutions are probably more evil than authoritarians - an authoritarian you can get rid of, but dismantling corrupt institutions is really, really hard. An authoritarian has a hard time making a case for why he should be the big cheese. Yet institutions pretty much take for granted they...

Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

So... if pointing out the depravity of Donald Trump simply convinces people to support Biden instead, then in a spiritual sense what really has been gained? However, if the pastor's message brings conservative Christians to their senses regarding the false hope and misplaced allegiance they have pl...

Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

Some here believe this retired pastor is too partisan... but I'm going to keep linking him because he addresses, through the lens of Jesus and the Bible, the issues that keep coming up on this forum. This recent video very much relates to this question of autocrat vs institutionalist... Here he's c...

Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

By the way, I'm pretty sure the Autocrat/Institutionalist dichotomy is not playing a major role in the selection process of the electorate. Maybe I'm being a bit cynical, but it seems like the motivation for the average voter is more short-term in nature. More often than not people are voting for th...

Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

I chose other. I think what is needed is less autocracy and less institutionalism. A more decentralized approach to government that returns decision making towards more local forms of government. Perhaps this is a different form of institutionalism. This makes sense. Both Autocrats and Institutiona...

Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

Much of purpose of the Constitution in the first place is to reign in or limit autocratic tendencies in our leaders. The word "reign" itself exhibits autocratic tendencies. If limiting them is the goal, it might be better to rein them in. :ugeek: It is of course a balance - leaders who ar...

Re: Autocrat vs Institutionalist

Can we have a fourth option for “I disagree with your assumptions that one candidate is institutionalist and one is authoritarian”? The poll asks "What is needed" - you are free to choose option 3 and make the case for something else if you wish. I would only add that seldom does anyone e...

Autocrat vs Institutionalist

Putting right and left aside for the moment (if that is even possible :) ) - the 2024 presidential election seems to be between a leader with Autocratic tendencies and a leader with Institutionalist tendencies. (BTW - I believe there are autocrats and institutionalists across the political spectrum)...

Re: Prayer Requests & Personal Testimonies

Sister Sharon Nisly (AKA: Mrs. Nisly from MennoNet, or Anabaptistenigma from MennoDiscuss) crossed over into eternity two days ago (April 18) after a relatively short battle with cancer. Here is her Obituary . Those of us who interacted with her over the years, both on MennoNet, and more extensively...
