Re: How do you celebrate Christmas?

A quote to throw into the mix of the discussion:
What Jesus desires of us is not the observance of things He did not command, but the things He did command.

Re: How do you celebrate Christmas?

Is there an argument against a celebration of Christmas that focuses on reading the Bible passages and singing relevant hymns? I think we are on safe ground whenever we are reading Scripture and singing hymns. It seems, however, that there is great cultural pressure to include more in the Christmas...

Re: How do you celebrate Christmas?

He makes the point that celebrating Christ's brith was not mentioned in the Bible- yet it was celebrated, just read about the angels when they proclaimed it to the shepherds! Or the Magi who came to worship Him, these Gentiles who knew this king was to be born! Yes, you are absolutely right about t...

Re: Antidepressants

The amount of Christians I know on antidepressants seems to grow continually. Honestly, it baffles me. I just dont see how Chistians can, in good conscience, rely on a doctors order to rid themselves of burdens like this? I know I could not. Am I lacking sympathy on this? What's your take? What's t...

Re: How do you celebrate Christmas?

I read a post recently entitled The Top 10 Reasons Why I Don't Celebrate Christmas . It is written by a pastor in the United Church of God. Setting aside the denominational background of the pastor, which of his points do you agree with or disagree with and why? Or if you agree with most of his poin...

Re: Legalism?

I think we should be careful about equating obedience to the words of Jesus and the apostles with legalism. Sometimes people start out obeying more out of fear or obligation than out of love. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Obedience for any reason is better than disobedience. For example, a rec...

Re: In-Depth Bible Study

[I agree with all of this until you get to "I am more inclined to trust the Byzantine text". But I'm also not confident that my opinion is correct, I am mostly confident that humility is called for. It's not something I feel strongly about either way. Just a preference...especially since ...

Re: In-Depth Bible Study

I'd be interested in your feelings on HCSB, I find it does a pretty good job of being readable while still being accurate. I've never read it. Actually, I get a little discouraged anytime a new English translation comes out when I know how great a need there is for languages all over the world that...

Re: In-Depth Bible Study

I don't much care which reading you give, but I would appreciate a footnote saying that some manuscripts give the other reading. I agree. This is one of the reasons I have been considering reading the New King James more because it is the only translation that gives clarity and transparency on text...
