Re: Articles by Asher Witmer
What I mean is...if a given practice is "sin," then is it ideal to label that sin "culture?" I would idealize calling "sin" sin rather than defining it as a cultural practice. However, using the standard definition of culture, one could say "a regularly occurring&...

Re: How do we read and use the Bible?
Seems right to me.
I think we should be careful though, as Paul exhorts, against getting too carried away with the "practical applications" - where the "practical applications" become too onerous.

Re: Articles by Asher Witmer
As for good news, I agree with the "kingdom coming" aspect of the good news, but there is more I think. I would propose that the Sermon on the Mount is good news. For example, the idea that turning the other cheek is more effective than military force, is good news to those who are so poor...

Re: Discipleship and New Birth - Is order important?
Very interesting question. FWIW not long ago I was in a leadership course and research be presented articulated a similar thing. The proposal was, don't worry so much about changing people's minds or motivations as a leader, change the behaviors first and once folks see the efficacy of the new "...

Re: Articles by Asher Witmer
Ernie, can sin be a culture? Or is sin a separate category? As an example, if by culture one means whether we wear a sari or a cape dress...then in my opinion, though clearly not everyone's, the good news is extracted from that question. If on the other hand, culture includes things like the rite of...

Re: Articles by Asher Witmer
So my question is, if Asher's first things gospel core doesn't seem to be relevant to his second things circle, what is his gospel? I think a lot of people (including Asher) think that the Gospel can be extracted from a human culture. The fact is that in most cases, God uses a human culture to spre...
