Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

That would simply be a consequence of the fact that cape dresses are no longer important and the custom is dying out. Except that it is not. More people at our church are wearing cape dresses than before. We have people in our church who do not want their children on the internet, and those who do ...

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

I’m not sure why this would be an issue for sewing and ministering? One family thinks they should wear cape dresses. Another family is influenced by Charity and is anti-cape dress. So at sewing, they are going to be at odds with each other... Ministering to worldly people also becomes difficult, be...

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

How is this functionally different from Lancaster of the 60’s and 70’s….even the 80’s? Indeed, by degrees your “other side” examples describe my family and nearly everyone I knew in my home congregation when I was young. “You’re welcome to maintain the conservatism of 1954 Lancaster Discipline but ...

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

In practical terms, trying to reconcile the two and come together becomes nearly impossible when you try to do things like come together for sewing, or ministering to seekers, or running a school. If some parents don't want any Internet, and some are OK with it, how is that going to work out in the...

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

In my mental hypothesis, those who grew up in Plain Anabaptist church would be expected to keep being Plain, and those who grew up in Evangelical churches and other not as disciplined backgrounds would be encouraged/expected to head in the direction of adding more disciplines to their lives, not le...

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

Only in transitional churches. In stable churches, such bishops and ministers are renowned. That’s quite a package, what is a stable church then? I haven’t seen it. Not eastern, not western fellowship and several independent churches. Every single church we’ve seen with perhaps the exception of the...

Unless hierarchy is built into your model of church, like the Anglicans, Catholics, Orthodox, Methodists, and some Anabaptists.

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

Lancaster Conference comes to mind... Are you thinking of the difference between the Martindale District and the rest of LMC? That seems to be all that's left of anything resembling what Ernie is talking about and I'm not sure how much longer that can last. I was thinking though of the slightly bro...

Re: Churches, Dealerships, and Franchises

My brother’s church’s school used to try to do this. So one family might watch TV at home, another doesn’t really practice the veiling, and so forth, but they all try to go to the same school. The school has a certain dress code and so forth. Every family was supposed to respect the other families....
