When I went to an Ohio Conference/MC USA (now FEC) church back in the early 2010s, I never heard anything about revival meetings. I think they were extinct by that point.
According to a history written of Anabaptists in the area, they were in full swing in the 1950s, tents and all.

Re: Nation-States
The deadliest war in history (or rather European history) was the 30 years war which was fought from 1618-1648 in an era that long preceded the modern nation state. Direct deaths numbered in the millions (from a much lower starting point) and some parts of Germany and Europe saw their populations d...

Husbands can and do die, leaving a woman on he own to support herself and her family Non-plain people can (and do) acquire life insurance. A woman can also work a job, and have extended family pitch in and help when a spouse dies. (A man whose wife dies has just as much hardship to face - if my wif...

Re: Taiping Rebellion
How much of China's official wariness of Christianity do you think is the result of the Taiping Rebellion and its leader's association with a version of Christianity? Taiping Rebellion, radical political and religious upheaval that was probably the most important event in China in the 19th century....

Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past
How would they know? Most people don't disclose their complete sexual history to the women or men they are dating. Even in small insular communities there is a lot that goes on in private. And people often seek it out beyond the borders of their communities. In our circles, we generally have an exp...

Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past
Losing your virginity the unforgivable sin? And what qualifies as “promiscuous?” It only takes once to transmit disease. "Promiscuous" in my own circles would mean just once. I am using the term in general to refer to someone who engages in fornication, adultery, and sodomy, whether with ...

Re: May 11 2024 Freedom of Religion in the U.S.
I spent my weekend with a friend who is Catholic, and she and her boyfriend are currently “negotiating” as she would prefer to be a stay at home wife and he wants her to keep working even after she has kids. Note that she is college educated, independent, and with a “career” except she’s also not we...

Re: HPV and Cancer link
Actually, the data Soloist presented above is that almost all the risk is from promiscuity. But I’ll answer your claims anyway. In my church circles, 1 out of 6 women are not raped. (I will ignore your weasel words of “rape or attempted rape”, because “attempted rape” is irrelevant to HPV. If 1 in 6...

It’s easier to have a fair debate if the numbers and books aren’t pre-cooked. I gave you sources for every number I cited. Which ones were "pre-cooked"? And you are welcome to present your own numbers and make your own arguments. I was responding to RZehr's argument that firearms pose a g...
