Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past
Side note: Where the "Holy Spirit is leading us together" approach gets weaponized is in patriarchal cultures where women are taught to accept male authority without question. I don't recommend this at all but as long as the woman is empowered to hear from God as well, it might work out.

Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past
Solid post Neto. The Disney, stardust model of "falling in love" may be overplayed, there are other paths. Several years ago there was a family in our church from a culture where marriages are commonly arranged by parents, as was their marriage, and it was happy and successful by all accou...

Re: Trump Convicted
What I learn from this thread is the crime and the actual law are not worth consideration. What is truly meaningful is the motives of the prosecution.
After reading this thread, I actually googled the definition of postmodern ethics.

Excellent HK, I could hardly agree more. I sat in a intro philosophy course taught by a gender studies professor who really wanted to teach 3rd wave feminism. A favorite activity for me was to imagine if she considered my mother oppressed in the patriarchy or a feminist. It wasn't always clear becau...

Re: "Traditional Pennsylvania Dutch" Foods?
This is mostly a foreign list to me. I have eaten most of them a time or two but nothing here was a regular diet item. The most familiar are red pickled eggs, apple butter and chicken pot pie.

Re: Taiping Rebellion
I read about this several months ago and was staggered by the loss of life. 20 million dead. In terms of shameful events in China connected to the name of Jesus, this ranks with the "boxer" rebellion when the British sent warships up the rivers for the missionaries and they got on them, le...

Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past
My wife and I went through pre marital counseling by my pastor. It included questions about sexual history. This seems reasonable to me.

Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past
I recently heard the stories (podcast) of two women who had that experience.

Re: HPV and Cancer link
I appreciate living in a society where people are allowed to make choices about their personal health. I also see value in mass vaccinations to slow disease circulation so vulnerable people are protected by "herd immunity". I don't know how to square that circle.
