Re: Should negligent parents be punished by the law?

So just because numbers of teen pregnancies are down doesn't necessarily mean that teens are better off now than they were as it pertains to morality. We may not have a way to calculate the children's "better off" metrics from years ago currently, but if its done its going to have to take...

Ah, but you're comparing two different things. The chance of receiving a speeding ticket is significantly higher than the risk of accidentally killing someone by speeding. The correct analogy would be whether the fear of going to jail for involuntary manslaughter due to killing someone when speedin...

Are you suggesting that the possibility of ending up in prison is a stronger deterrent to you and have more of an impact on your behavior compared with an equal or greater probability that your child would die as a result of your behavior? Because if the death of your child is a worse than a prison...

What is the most concerning is how they claimed the stuff with Hunter and Ashley's diary wasn't true, when it actually was. It points to a complete lack of integrity. If they can't tell the truth about something like that, how can they be trusted on anything else? Who is the "they" you ar...

They aren't remotely comparable. The TX bridge is vastly smaller and simpler and the damage is far less

Wife: From the map we saw of where everything took place, it wasn't directly next to the waterfall, but a little upstream. Thus, the danger, although very real, was not as obvious as it would have been if they were right next to the cliff. The signs were there warning people of the hidden danger. A...

Re: Should negligent parents be punished by the law?

I’m okay in principle to having laws that punish negligent parents and protect children. But I would idealize them as having a pretty high bar for prosecution. The laws we have currently are prone to at least occasional abuse by over zealous prosecutors and DHS. But on the other hand, I’m not sure ...

I’m assuming that you are excluding unborn children here, and that for those, it is more than perfectly acceptable to intentionally unalive them wholesale, right? I'm not sure what you are getting at. I'm using examples of negligence. If you want to bring in unborn children who die from negligence ...

Re: Mennonite Girl ,3, swept over waterfalls,2 years ago, parents now charged

In our legal system, we usually punish negligence with civil fines. In the case of parents of a child, there's nobody to punish, because the people who cared the most about that child are already punished enough by the natural consequences. In our system, punishments are allegedly to be a deterrent...

Re: Mennonite Girl ,3, swept over waterfalls,2 years ago, parents now charged

Is it more acceptable to kill your own child than the child of a stranger? I would suggest no. The tragedy is that the child died. Children are not the possessions or personal property of their parents. They are independently deserving of protection from the law. It should not be more acceptable to...
