Re: An interesting view on Mennonite non-resistance

Fascinating reading. Not surprising I guess. The Nazis were more obsessed with race rather than religion and the Mennonites in places like Ukraine would have been viewed as colonies of ethnic Germans who probably mostly still spoke German and identified as German. There were dozens of other protesta...

Old Apostolic Lutherans?

Just wondering if any of you have ever come into contact with Apostolic Lutherans. In my area of SW Washington they seem to be a growing denomination with large plain churches that look a lot like plain Mennonite churches except larger. Here's one near my house: https://www.columbian.com/news/2012/f...

Re: Trudy, again

By the early 1970’s, a new idea came about. The new idea that rape is violence, having nothing to do with sex, or love. This was a game-changer. No more, “he loved you so much, he couldn’t help himself,” or, “his needs were so great, he couldn’t help himself.” It takes time to change deep cultural ...

Re: On being liberal and our diversity (poll)

I wonder if Jesus was to drop in today and look at what we have created in our customs (convictions ?) just which brand of Christianity, He would say, best reflects what He intended His Church to look like ? My guess it would be similar to the letters to the churches in the book of the Revelation. ...

Re: Trudy, again

“TRUDY, AGAIN”? Please, no! Let me explain why I say that. I am an Anabaptist from a Catholic-like background. Having lived in a truly conservative Anabaptist world for a couple of decades, I now have very few friends who are not conservative types. During a recent visit at the home of a life-long ...

Re: The second commandment and pictures

The worship of graven images produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing seems to be a bigger problem for most people than the worship of images produced by Canon or Nikon or Apple (though worship of the Apple itself seems to be serious competition these days). So a true Christian should avoid...

Re: On being liberal and our diversity (poll)

It has perplexed me over the years at what some church groups deem acceptable occupations, and what is frowned upon or prohibited. Working night shift, OTR truck driving, paid EMT.... I could go on. I'm perfectly comfortable questioning certain professions that are exploitative, violent, or otherwi...

Re: On being liberal and our diversity (poll)

I think freedom of association is a right enshrined in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution right there with freedom of religion. And I don't personally see any religious or ethical issues with partipating in labor unions in general. Or any reason for a blanket prohibition. Even though in specific...

Re: The second commandment and pictures

I, like most people, interpret this commandment to be a prohibition on creating idols to worship in place of God. The cultural/historical context of that time during the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age was that pretty much every other culture and people in the middle east and mediterranian spent a...
