Re: Why aren't Mennonites Constantinian?

... My point all along is that we should be wary when using modern categories to work out teachings of 2000 years ago... I think it is wise to use categories from 2000 years ago to work out the teaching of Jesus and his apostles in their own time. The Greek word Jesus chose for "I will build m...

Re: The Anabaptist perception towards U.S. Holidays!

My life experience is that almost all people I’ve known who kept claiming that Easter and Christmas are “pagan” eventually became pagans themselves. The simple fact is is that celebrating Easter and Christmas goes back a long, long time - Easter in particular to the time of the apostles. It is impo...

Re: The Anabaptist perception towards U.S. Holidays!

The fact some Christians do questionable practices on Sunday doesn’t mean I don’t think we should to church on Sunday. I never said that we shouldn’t go to church. Do you have to exaggerate a person’s stance every time? Commemorating Jesus’ death and resurrection (particularly with a communion serv...

Re: The Anabaptist perception towards U.S. Holidays!

What pagan holidays are listed? I suppose All Saint’s Eve (Halloween) might vaguely be that. By practice, Christmas, Halloween, Easter and valentine’s Day. How are Christmas and Easter “pagan”? Do I really need to detail the pagan practices promoted and endorsed by the majority of Christian churche...

Re: The Anabaptist perception towards U.S. Holidays!

Not only is there no mandate, Romans teaches believers not to judge others how they celebrate holidays. Rom 14:5  One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. Rom 14:6  He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the ...

Re: Why aren't Mennonites Constantinian?

This seems like a slightly different question/argument than the one I had proposed in the context of my previous response. You seem to be asking if someone in the Kingdom of God can still be a sinner on earth. In particular, you would suggest that Boris and/or Gleb were murderers. Anyway, I would s...

Re: Why aren't Mennonites Constantinian?

I do not think, though, that humans are universally incapable of participating in the kingdom of God when they participate in civil hierarchical structures. As an example of this, I present the Russian saints, the Passion-bearers Boris and Gleb . Being princes of Vladimir the Great and heirs to the...

Who determines what is acceptable?

Historically it's been powerful nations with wealth and technology who set the rules of war in a way that favors their preferred method of fighting.
Or more specifically, enforce whatever rules favoring their own empires.
