Probably. Depends a bit on if it was started as an outreach and attracted outreach-minded people or if it started as a farmland acquisition opportunity.

Re: Do Plain Catholics exist?

I debated whether to say something or not. Max isn’t here to convert us. I can give you the key to what’s going on here: once you’ve met and figured out one pathological liar (it’s hard the first time) it’s a lot easier to pick up on them when they come along. Some people would rather climb a tree ...

Re: Lancaster Online: web usage among Amish & Mennonites

It would be different for your church, Josh. In the case of Eastern, the other churches in question are usually similar enough it seems there should be enough mutual trust to sort out issues as they come up. If an organizations bylaws called for a much more liberal group to handle conflicts I think...

Re: Menfolk: Your church's standards on facial hair?

What is the imperative to tolerate moustaches? In my opinion, the imperative is faithfulness to biblical teachings about masculinity and creation principles. The argument from creation in 1 Cor. 11 that Paul makes also applies to men's facial hair. It is another thing that nature teaches us. I supp...

Re: Lancaster Online: web usage among Amish & Mennonites

Very interesting... I guess running a nonprofit and then trying to get people from each constituency on the board would be difficult. (Granted, I operate a nonprofit myself and our bylaws limit board members to just our own constituency because, well, it would just be too difficult to figure certai...

Re: Lancaster Online: web usage among Amish & Mennonites

Two stories got out and gained momentum- one was that primarily one district voted against the internet. This was later proven to be false, as many concerned individuals and ministry began discussing what they actually voted. The other was that disgruntled internet users voted no as a "so ther...

Re: Lancaster Online: web usage among Amish & Mennonites

Certain businesses were invited to trial the system, eventually others who requested the system were also granted the privilege. Two stipulations were made. One, web access was to be used "only for business purposes" and two, that since this was a test program approved by the bishops but ...

Re: Lancaster Online: web usage among Amish & Mennonites

My memory of the announcement is that the vote was close (within a few percentage points?), but I don't have any record of that. That the final decision overrode the agreed upon procedure makes me uncomfortable. Do you remember what the difference was between the required percentage and the actual?...

Re: Lancaster Online: web usage among Amish & Mennonites

I've wondered at times if Eastern's justification of the internet (after the church wide vote was overwhelming negative) My memory of the announcement is that the vote was close (within a few percentage points?), but I don't have any record of that. That the final decision overrode the agreed upon ...
