Re: Transitional Churches
As I said earlier, churches that are counter-culture don't always have generation gap. I remember as a youth that onlookers marveled how that our conference did not have a generation gap. (There were a few slight changes but very little. If anything the conference keeps inching toward a more conser...

Re: Reading the Bible
I thought it may be good to start a new thread for this topic. I don't have time to write about all the things I have needed to unlearn. Maybe I will write a book about that someday. I don't profess to read the Bible from the viewpoint of the Biblical writers. Although I think I do so more now than...

Re: Importance of a High School Diploma/GED
There rest of the forum can go ahead and laugh... but I was accused of trying to uncover a tax evasion scheme among the local Mennonite communities... the fact that I didn't use a certain local Mennonite accountant (who will remain un-named) didn't help things either ;) I attracted a similar accusa...

Re: No Turning Back (either to Christendom or Secularism)
I haven't yet read this particular essay of Hart's yet, but I have for some time (maybe 2 years?) noted a seemingly Anabaptist turn in his thought. Actually it goes back more than 2 years. See this essay from 2016: https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/christs-rabble. What do you make of his concurren...

Re: Saved, Unsaved, Saved again, etc
On another thread with a poll someone said they doubt we can know for sure we are born again. This got me wondering about the views here regarding salvation. My understanding of Anabaptism generally is that you can be saved and then lose your salvation (become unsaved). Although I was in an MB chur...

Re: Dated Songs, Technology Songs, and Anabaptist Tradition
Every once in a while, I am amused by some of the songs Plain Anabaptists sing. A few years ago I was in one of the most conservative Anabaptist congregations for a hymn sing. We sang the song, "Oh, come Angel Band come and around me stand. Oh bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal ho...

Re: Concerning Divorce
Generally, I think true churches are going to have to start taking back the definition of these basic social things that the culture have perverted, but it seems to run hard up against some fundamentalism about permanence of marriage that I can't quite reckon with. That's a great way of putting it....

Re: Concerning Divorce
I have a number of questions, and I would like to primarily hear from the folks here who are in churches that abide by, and/or personally abide by strict permanence of marriage. I am a member of a church in Pilgrim Mennonite Conference, which prohibits divorce and remarriage. I am not interested in...

Re: Revival Meetings
And here are a few thoughts and stories from me... Yes, I wouldn't really feel like inviting friends to revival meetings that weren't familiar with the culture. I've found it interesting that some conservative Mennonites have some cultural overlap with evangelicals in weird ways. Revival meetings w...

Re: Revival Meetings
In the church we are attending, which is probably typical of many conservative Mennonite churches, the fall revival meetings provide an opportunity for young people to make a decision to follow Christ, followed by instruction class, baptism, and church membership. So they are a sort of seasonal rit...
