Re: Cons. Anabaptist ordination practices

I like this. What sort of church is this? Ernie -it is an unaffiliated Mennonite church in Ontario - Faith Mennonite. Interesting. I have in-laws that go to Faith. Was not aware of how they did ordinations. the two year licensing period is something that's been done for the last 12 years or so.

Re: The conservative Anabaptist office of bishop

Not having Bishops isn’t the right answer. Having 1 bishop for several churches also doesn’t seem right. I don’t object to them helping a new church, but local leadership should eventually take over. In our case, we simply consider all ministers to hold the office of "bishop" as described...

Re: Cons. Anabaptist ordination practices

In our congregation, nominations are given by members - the lot is determined by "natural break" for example - if one name is given 60 times, and 2 names 3 times and two times, we would move forward without a lot. Candidates are then interviewed to determine sense of call, as well as to d...

Re: Cons. Anabaptist ordination practices

According to my understanding, conservative Mennonites (but not Amish nor Amish-Mennonites) conduct ordinations by lot. One source told me 25% or so of ordinations won’t be by lot, but whomever oversees the ordination (typically bishops) will simply choose the nominee(s) they like best. The other 7...

Re: Should CA ministers, deacons, and bishops be paid?

Our congregation holds 6 offerings per year for pastoral support- divided equally between our pastors and deacons. All bivocational - I believe each one receives around 7k per year from this to offset time off work, travel, meetings, etc all within our local congregation. Visiting preachers are paid...

Dunno. I think everyone agrees isolation is not what we're looking for.
a few years later, I'm curious where your congregation ended up?

I would add that it is also impacted by the church reaping the harvest of individualism in previous generations. Essentially, its the Renaissance coming home to roost.

Re: Are Marriage Vows Scriptural ?

At our church, we use these vows - as I've aged, I've become increasingly reluctant to let couples write their own vows and instead, request that they use the vows that the broader church uses to define the terms of their covenant commitment to each other. The reality is that marriage is a covenant ...
