Re: Singing the Psalms - Looking for Old Tunes
From what I can tell, 4 part singing arose as an American cultural thing in the 1800s and was a popular hobby. At least contemporary literature seems to show that. Eventually it became popular in religious circles too, with the most conservative folks stubbornly clinging to 1 part. Probably sort of...

Re: Singing the Psalms - Looking for Old Tunes
As entails its evolution among Plain folk, you might make some study into Sacred Harp/Harmonia Sacra, and the development of the Aiken notation system. These all lent themselves to said evolution, at least on this side of the Pond. Thanks for that tip. I've got the Sacred Harp book and have attende...

Re: Singing the Psalms - Looking for Old Tunes
Have you found some of what you are looking for? And did you have a specific tune in mind perhaps? And are you interested in the Psalms put to verse? I do have in my humble collection several hymnbooks and tune books either of venerable antiquity, or they are at the early end of 1800 and list vario...

Re: Anabaptist Evangelism
I don't know this Simon Fry fellow Anabaptist but I ran across his site while trying to find more on Anabaptist Evangelism. He asks these questions - What is it about our churches, though, that tends to keep others out rather than “bringing them in”? What needs to change for us to make an impact on...

Re: Recently attended an EPMC Bible School AMA
do you know of any (easy) way to learn more? i’m doubting they have FB pages or websites? blogs? if there’s a way, i would enjoy following along their path/progress. There's a Fairview Mennonite Church and Fairview Christian School in Reading, PA that was started as an outreach to the city children...

Re: Anabaptist Evangelism
Here's a quote from The Recovery of the Anabaptist Vision : One significant implication of the Great Commission is the conception of the Christian calling or "vocation" according to to which all cultural aims are subordinated to the missionary task. All concerns of life such as family, occ...

Forum for Singing and Music Topics?
I was wondering if there's enough interest and material to have a forum/section specifically for music, hymns, singing and related topics. I know a few people who don't participate here on MN that might take some interest in participating specifically on those topics. Maybe this has been discussed b...

Singing the Psalms - Looking for Old Tunes
It's my understanding that some "faith traditions" have sung the Biblical Psalms and maybe still do. I read somewhere that the puritans sang only the Psalms and were opposed to singing anything else. In the book I've been reading about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was Lutheran (maybe something...

Re: Philosophical and Spiritual Happenings of the 1800's
Another one, perhaps bigger than all those mentioned, but somehow ignored until now: Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism's effect can be seen in so much of the New Age, America's Christianity, and the society at-large.. A few things I can think of: -the need to look to self/ experience, not the Bi...

Re: Christians Competing With Others
I personally believe that competitiveness has no place in the Kingdom of God, including the local church or broader church. Having said that, I grew up playing lots of competitive games and I don't feel like it damaged my "vision" on this particular topic. Just because I played some board ...
