Re: Distinguishing Mountains from Molehills

This is an interesting list to start with as "essential", particularly since the word "Trinity" never appears in the Bible and the New Testament sure doesn't ever claim it to be foundational to the faith. But the NT does teach that following and obeying Jesus is. Which leads me ...

Re: Distinguishing Mountains from Molehills

The essentials in my view are the first and second greatest commandments. The rest is less weighty. Absolutely. If I have all faith, so that I can move mountains, or all doctrinal truth, or an outwardly very righteous life, and have not love, it profits me nothing. YouTube has a sermon by Rick Rhod...

Re: Distinguishing Mountains from Molehills

Why not just start form the Nicene Creed? I'd be fine with that personally, as it lines up with the previous orthodox teachings of the church (per the rule of faith, etc.) and the worst christological heresies of the time do not. But a couple reasons, 1, I've been studying the 2nd century church re...

Re: How accurate do you find this map?

For me West Virginia is usually the place you go to get to somewhere better - driving through on the way south. I do think of the West - Colorado and Utah, in my experience - being the place you go to see nature. If the purpose of your travel is to see museums and historical sites, then none of thes...

Re: The Danger of Reactionary Theology

I don't see "worth keeping" vs. "optional" as a way to categorize doctrines. I know my church thinks the head covering is worth keeping. But we also think Christians can disagree about important matters, even things that make it necessary to belong to a different congregation or...

Re: Distinguishing Mountains from Molehills

In the first couple centuries of the church, they had the "rule of faith". (The "Apostles' Creed" is actually significantly newer - from the 400s, 500s, or so). There were plenty of other important things that they talked about, sometimes disagreeing, sometimes agreeing; but with...

Distinguishing Mountains from Molehills

This is a spinoff from this other post . How do we distinguish more important doctrines and practices from less important ones? It's common sense that not all doctrines are equally important. No one thinks your opinion about the rapture is as important as believing in the bodily resurrection of Chri...

Re: Rampaging Horses in London

And I heard a voice say, "Behold!" And I beheld, and lo! I saw a white horse, and a dark horse, both with a saddle, but no rider; and they ran wildly down the streets of the city, for they had no one to guide them, and were afraid. And there was much confusion and excitement. And I saw the...

Re: The Danger of Reactionary Theology

I don't see in Scripture that it says to use removal/excommunication from fellowship on those who disagree about how to apply Scripture (rather than on those who deny core doctrines of the faith or live in unrepentant sin). We don't excommunicate or discipline people from the two Rosedale Network c...

Re: The Danger of Reactionary Theology

When was this? 1559 I believe, as a result of the Strasbourg conference of 1557. See here under (3): https://gameo.org/index.php?title=Strasbourg_Conferences Peter Hoover wrote about it in The Secret of the Strength. Also see this book "Later Writings of the Swiss Anabaptists" (page 23 of...
